What’s in a House?

1. Preplanning
Objective- Upon completion of the lesson the students will recall the items mentioned from the story and label and sort (expressive and receptive language) items that belong inside a house and items that belong outside of a house with 100% accuracy as measured by various teacher directed activities.

Goal/Standards- The students will listen to the story The Napping House and respond to questions asked while reading the text. The students will identify objects that belong inside a house and those that belong outside a house.
4K Good Start Grow Smart standards:
AL 5 Children extend their learning through the use of memory, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
ELA 4K-6.3 Classify objects and information by observable attributes into predetermined categories.
M 4K-1.5 Classify objects in their environment by function and category.
BIG IDEA: This lesson will help students begin to identify and understand what items and objects belong inside and outside, and then be able to understand what activities and actions are appropriate inside and outside. Therefore, they will understand the different routines and behaviors for inside and outside.

Materials/Technology-

Pictures of items that belong inside a house (toilet, oven, bed, etc.)
Pictures of items that belong outside a house (sandbox, sun, etc.)
Baskets labeled with pictures inside (picture of house) and outside (picture of outside)

2. Set Up
Anticipatory Set/ Multiple Means of Engagement
Getting Attention- This lesson will be presented during Circle Time during the afternoon group time. It will be presented in a whole group setting. "I need everyone to find their seats and look at me when you are ready."
Expectations- Students will be reminded of the classroom rules. The teacher will point to each picture rule on the board as student's state each rule.

3. Lesson Opening
"Today we will be reading a story about a house where everyone is napping. (Teacher will show an image of the cover of the book on the Smart Board). When we read this story we will get to see all of things that are inside of a house. While I'm reading I want you to look for different things inside of the house. When we finish the story we are going to try to remember what we saw so that we can talk about what belongs inside of a house and what belongs outside."

4. Lesson Body
Procedure/Multiple Means of Presentation- Model, Lead, Test
The teacher will:
Model: Introduce the story to the children. We will talk about different items in a house those that belong inside and those that belong outside. (Prior Knowledge)
Lead: We will begin reading the story. As we come across items on each page, I will ask the children questions about where they belong and if they have them at home.
Test: At the end of the story, I will use pictures of different objects some that belong inside and others that belong outside (ex: bed-inside, sandbox-outside) and have the children identify and sort the different objects into baskets labeled inside and outside with pictures under the words. I will first model an item, then lead all the children in one, and proceed to have each child complete the task individually on what each item is and where to put it.

5. Extended Practice
I will have a Smart Board activity set up with a table that is labeled with words and pictures two columns inside and outside with pictures of different items (from the story and the previous activity). I will model labeling and sorting an item and place it in the appropriate column by dragging it with a pointer, then have each child complete one on their own. This along with the basket activity will be my assessment, as I record the number of correct and incorrect responses.

6. Lesson Closing
I will work with each child one on one. I will use this individualized instruction to assess their comprehension and ability to label and sort inside and outside objects and their understanding of the concept. I will document responses for each child. For the children who are unable to independently label and sort objects that belong inside and outside of a house, we will review the concept of what belongs in a house and what belongs outside. We will complete the activity of labeling and sorting objects again, and I will offer verbal prompts. If the student is unable to identify the objects after receiving verbal prompts, I will offer physical prompts. I will end the lesson with the closing song "The House Song".

7. Evaluation/Multiple Means of Expression
Students will be evaluated based on their abilities to sort the picture items during Circle Time and their ability to label items from the story. Data will be collected during the lesson by the Paraprofessional.
Tally the # of correct responses for each student
Student
Label (name) items inside or outside (Expressive Language)
Get and sort items into inside or outside categories (Receptive Language)
