1. Preplanning
Lesson Objective: The objective of this lesson is for the students to identify and count the number of skittles that they have in their bowls. The students will each have their own bowl of skittles to express the different colors in a rainbow, during the activity the child will be able to count the total number of skittles in their bowl and the number of each color that they have. Each child will be able to do this with 100% accuracy.

Goals/Standards:
4K Good Start, Grow Smart Standards
M-4K-1.6: Use appropriate vocabulary to communicate mathematical ideas.
M-4K-1.8: Integrate mathematical ideas into personal representations.
M-3K-2.1: Show curiosity and interest in counting and number.

Materials/Technology:
Skittles
Bowls
Rainbow Worksheets
Pencils
SMARTBoard
Computer
Excel Skittle Color Chart/Graph
Skittle Activity & Chart (for additional assistance)

2. Set Up
Anticipatory Set/Multiple Means of Engagement
Getting Attention- This lesson will be presented during Circle Time during the afternoon group time. It will be presented in a whole group setting. “I need everyone to find their color squares on the carpet and look up at me when you are ready.”
Expectations- I will review the classroom rules with the students. The teacher will point to each rule on the board as student’s state each rule.

3. Lesson Opening
“Look at all the colorful skittles in your bowls! I see many different colors like red and yellow and purple and green. It looks like a rainbow in your bowl, except we’re missing one color can you tell me which color is missing? (Blue). That’s right! You have a lot of skittles and a lot of different colors in your bowls! I need your help. I want to know how many skittles there are in your bowl and how many of each color you have! Can you help me count? Ok let’s gets started counting our colorful rainbow skittles. When you pick up a skittle look at what color it is and match it to the same color stripe in your rainbow.”

4. Lesson Body
Multiple Means of Presentation- Model, Lead, Test
At this point in the activity I will model- lead- test this for the students. I will demonstrate how to do this activity. I will have my own bowl of skittles and will demonstrate for them what we are going to do by placing each skittle color with the same color on my rainbow sheet. I will have the SMARTBOARD up with the EXCEL worksheet for us to fill out as each child counts their skittle colors.

Procedures:
The teacher will:
1. Demonstrate for the students how to place their colored skittles on their rainbows and how many skittles there are for each color.
2. Provide instructional help for students with counting and color concepts.

5. Extended Practice
1. After the teacher or assistant helps the student write the number of each skittle color on their rainbow sheets, the students will individually come up and bring their paper rainbow with them to the front. We will plug in each of their color numbers in Excel on the SMARTBoard and AutoSum the total number. When they count their flowers we will use the SMARTBOARD.
2. The students will be able to offer support to their classmates.
3. If a child needs additional support, I have different colored skittles on the SMARTBOARD that I will be able to use to help show them the correct coloring and counting concepts.

6. Lesson Closing
“Everyone did a great job sorting their colors and counting their rainbow skittles today. We learned about the different colors in a rainbow and then we created a chart of how many different colored skittles each friend had. Continue to practice finding different colors at home and throughout the day today that are the same as the colors in a rainbow.“

7. Evaluation/Multiple Means of Expression
I will offer students who need extra support multiple means of expression. For students who have trouble counting their skittles or recalling the color of each I will have a colorful skittle activity on the SMARTBoard for additional support.
Students will be assessed on their ability to participate in the activity, sort their colors on the rainbow, and count up to ten skittles independently.

Performance Criteria: See the chart and graph.
